Why Current Exploitation Makes Me Reconsider British Colonial Rule
For years, I saw the British mainly as brutal colonisers who harmed and exploited our people. However, Nigeria’s current struggles with resource extraction have made me question how we compare different forms of exploitation. I am particularly concerned about allegations of illegal mining in the Middle Belt and the role of foreign buyers in the rare-earth minerals trade. Reports of communities being displaced by insecurity raise serious questions about who benefits from Nigeria’s natural resources. Colonial rule caused real harm, including environmental damage in the Niger Delta. Still, I believe the Nigerian government must urgently confront illegal mining, protect affected communities and ensure that local people benefit from the resources found on their land.
