South Africa Rejects Xenophobia Label, Says 364 Arrested Over Attacks on African Migrants
South Africa’s acting Consul-General in Lagos, Kgothatso Xulu, says her country rejects xenophobia and should not be defined by attacks on African migrants. Speaking at a conference in Lagos, Xulu said 364 people had been arrested in connection with the attacks. She acknowledged concerns around irregular migration and poor service delivery, but argued that isolated incidents should not be used to label all South Africans. She called for honest African discussions on migration, trade and economic opportunity. Xulu said the African Continental Free Trade Area should help citizens move and do business across borders because of opportunity, not hardship. She also urged African countries, including Nigeria, to play a stronger role in international decision-making and work together on the causes of migration and anti-foreigner violence.
