NEC Approves 90-Day Plan to Cut Living Costs and Improve Food Affordability
The National Economic Council has approved a 90-day economic action plan aimed at easing living costs, improving food affordability and attracting investment nationwide. The plan focuses on food prices, tax harmonisation, priority projects, investment bottlenecks and targeted household support. The council also approved a national project-tracking dashboard to improve transparency, including reports on how fuel subsidy removal proceeds are used. It directed federal and state authorities to work with transport operators so savings from compressed natural gas and electric vehicles can lead to lower fares for commuters. Vice President Kashim Shettima said the reforms should be judged by whether Nigerians can better afford transport, healthcare and other essential needs. The council also discussed Ebola preparedness, polio immunisation and livestock development.
