Accused Cleric Denies Coup Plot, Says ₦10m Was for Prayers
An Islamic cleric in Abuja has told a Federal High Court that the ₦10 million linked to his account was payment for spiritual services, not funding for an alleged coup against President Tinubu. Sheikh Bukar Kashim Goni, one of six defendants facing treason and terrorism charges, appeared before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik. Prosecutors showed video evidence and bank records connecting him to Col. Mohammed Maaji, the main suspect in the plot. Goni said his relationship with the military officer was strictly religious. He insisted the money covered prayers and charity, while investigators pointed out transfers dating back to March 2023 and a major ₦10 million deposit in October 2024. Another defendant, a Julius Berger staff member at the Presidential Villa, also denied knowing of any coup plans. The government alleges a September 2025 conspiracy to overthrow the administration. Proceedings resume May 11–13.
