Ezza Community Calls for Return of Queen Mgbafor Nnele’s Crown from British Museum

The British Museum reportedly holds a beaded crown identified in its records as an “Igbo beadwork cap.” Ezza people say the object is the royal crown of Queen Mgbafor Nnele of Ezza Kingdom, dating to the 1560s. The crown, listed under asset number AF1978,12.1, is said to have been taken during the Pitt Rivers expedition in 1909. The post calls for the museum to correct its description of the item and return it to Ezza Kingdom. According to the account, Ezekuna founded Ezza Kingdom, while the four Ezzas formed the Ezza North, Ezza South, Ishielu and Ikwo clans. Onueke is identified as the kingdom’s capital. The demand is not for compensation, but for the return and proper recognition of Ezza history and heritage.
