Penance in a Death Row Cell

A death-row prisoner sits alone in his isolation cell, reflecting on the choices that brought him there. Then a strange portal opens in the air, and a man in a black suit steps through. The visitor introduces himself as Penance, a physical embodiment of guilt and self-punishment. He says he has come to keep the prisoner company until his execution, drawn by the weight of the prisoner's remorse. As they speak, the prisoner questions whether there is life after death and whether confession can ever ease the burden of his past. Penance cannot offer absolution, but he invites him to begin telling the story of the sins that haunt him.
