Mining Marshals Say Abuja Quarry Must Remain Closed Pending Illegal Mining Trial
The Mining Marshals have defended the continued closure of Stone Rockers Nigeria Limited’s quarry in Abuja, saying the site remains a crime scene in an ongoing illegal mining case before the Federal High Court. The agency said Stone Rockers and one of its directors are facing charges over allegations of mining within an area covered by a licence belonging to Lord’s Career Ventures Nigeria Limited. It said its investigation, including mining-cadastre records, placed the disputed location within the complainant’s mining lease. Stone Rockers has petitioned government officials over the 13-month shutdown, describing it as unlawful and claiming there is no court order authorising it. The Mining Marshals rejected that claim, maintaining that the closure is tied to the criminal prosecution and cannot be lifted until the matter is determined. The agency also said it may review its earlier decision to exclude some workers from the charge if further evidence shows they played a greater role in the alleged illegal mining activities.
