Could Breaking Up Nigeria End the Bloodshed?

The violence across Nigeria — from farmer–herder clashes and banditry to terrorism — is really a full-scale bloodbath. Armed groups are carving wide swaths of tears and blood, especially in the North, Middle Belt and now the Southwest. If we stop lying to ourselves, six to eight smaller, self-governed nations could emerge naturally and be better managed. Right now, shared oil and gas revenues only deepen the conflict as militias fight for resources. But is dividing Nigeria the real solution? Or can we find unity and still curb the death and destruction sweeping the land?
