EFCC Urges Court to Reject Emefiele’s No-Case Submission in $6.23m Fraud Trial
The EFCC has asked the FCT High Court in Maitama, Abuja, to reject former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele’s no-case submission in his alleged $6.23 million fraud trial. The prosecution said its evidence established a prima facie case requiring him to enter a defence. Emefiele is facing a 20-count amended charge involving alleged criminal breach of trust, forgery, abuse of office, conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence. The charges include allegations that contracts worth between $6 million and $10 million were unfairly awarded to companies linked to his associates. The prosecution alleged that the CBN’s Major Contracts Tender Board was bypassed and that a company connected to Emefiele’s associates won all 45 contracts under review. It also argued that letters used to authorise the withdrawal of $6.23 million from the CBN were forged. Emefiele’s lawyer maintained that the prosecution had not established the essential elements of the alleged offences. The court said it would communicate a date for its ruling on the no-case submission.
