PeacePro Calls for Prosecution of Identity-Based Campaigning in Ogun Governorship Race
The Foundation for Peace Professionals has urged the Federal Government and law-enforcement agencies to act against politicians who use indigeneity or ancestry to exclude candidates during elections. The group referred to the dispute over Ogun State APC governorship candidate Solomon Adeola’s ancestry. It said political arguments should focus on policies, competence, integrity and legal qualifications rather than a candidate’s origin. PeacePro cited Section 101 of the Electoral Act 2026, which prohibits campaigns based on religious, tribal or sectional considerations. Individuals convicted under the provision may face fines of ₦3 million to ₦5 million, up to 12 months’ imprisonment, or both. Political parties may be fined between ₦30 million and ₦50 million. It warned that identity-based campaigning could deepen divisions and undermine peaceful democratic participation.
