Nigerian Graduates Lead Major Nationalities Staying Back in the UK

Nigerian students are the most likely among major international student groups to remain in the United Kingdom after graduation, according to a new migration briefing. About 78% of Nigerians who arrived on UK student visas in 2020 still held valid visas at the end of 2025. This was higher than the 58% recorded among Indian students in the same cohort. Students from China and the United States were less likely to remain. Many graduates stay by switching to Graduate Visas or work visas. However, neither a study visa nor a Graduate Visa provides a direct route to permanent settlement. Time spent on them generally counts toward the 10-year long-residence route instead. The UK has also proposed tougher settlement rules, including increasing the standard qualifying period from five to 10 years. The details and implementation timeline were still unclear as of June 2026.
