Addressing Maid Abuse: A Call for Igbo Women’s August Meeting
I’ve been reflecting on a troubling pattern I keep seeing. Many reports of child abuse and grievous harm to domestic workers seem linked to women from the eastern region. This isn’t about profiling, but about confronting a serious problem. Too often, maids and young people in our care suffer in silence. I’ve noticed that in about eight or nine out of every ten cases, the perpetrator is an Igbo woman. It makes me wonder why husbands stay quiet when such cruelty takes place. My suggestion is simple: at this year’s August meeting, Igbo women should dedicate time to discussing and condemning maltreatment of domestic workers. Those found guilty should face social sanctions to deter others. Making this part of our community development agenda could protect vulnerable children and restore our reputation.
