Okpebholo Approves Ikpoba River Hotel as Temporary Base for Army’s 83 Division
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has approved the abandoned Ikpoba River Hotel in Benin City as a temporary facility for the Nigerian Army’s newly created 83 Division. The site in Temboga community, Ikpoba-Okha LGA, is being cleared and rehabilitated ahead of the division’s take-off. The governor said the temporary barracks, including renovated buildings and supporting facilities, should be ready within two weeks. The hotel complex, originally approved during the administration of former Mid-West military governor Samuel Ogbemudia, has been abandoned for decades. It reportedly became overgrown and was used as a hideout by criminals. Army officials said the work follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive for the operationalisation of the 83 Division in Benin. Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has, however, appealed for the division to be located in Delta State instead, citing security needs across Edo, Delta and Bayelsa states.
