IMF Warns AI Could Reshape 40% of Jobs Worldwide
The IMF says artificial intelligence could affect about 40% of jobs globally by changing, improving or eliminating some roles. Its Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, urged governments to prepare workers for a labour market reshaped by AI. She said developing economies need reliable electricity, digital infrastructure, relevant skills and strong safeguards to benefit from AI adoption. Lower exposure to AI in low-income countries, she noted, reflects slower adoption rather than protection from its effects. The IMF also warned that young people may face fewer entry-level opportunities as routine tasks decline. Governments were urged to support lifelong learning, practical workplace training and policies that help workers adapt as AI changes the balance between labour and capital.
