Gbenga Daniel: Nigeria Cannot Build Lasting Security on a Weak Economy

Former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel says Nigeria must treat economic growth and security as inseparable national priorities. Speaking at a Lagos forum on the future of Nigeria’s economy and security, he argued that a weak economy cannot sustain lasting security, while insecurity also discourages investment and growth. He noted Nigeria’s reported 4.43% economic growth in the second quarter of 2026 and the strong contribution of the non-oil sector. However, he said the true test of progress is whether young people can find jobs, farmers can work safely, and small businesses can cope with electricity, transport and financing costs. Daniel described security as essential economic infrastructure. He said fear keeps farmers away from their land, forces businesses to spend more on protection and drives investors elsewhere. Citing reports of more than 7,800 abductions between July 2025 and June 2026, he urged government to secure farms, roads and communities to support food production, commerce and investment.
