FEC Approves ₦2.078 Trillion for 23 Strategic Road Projects in 10 States

At a Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the council approved 23 strategic road projects worth ₦2.078 trillion. Works Minister Senator David Umahi said the funding covers schemes in Adamawa, Taraba, Ebonyi, Kwara, Cross River, Kogi, Lagos, Niger, Oyo and Plateau States. Key among the approvals is a ₦1.8325 trillion contract for the reconstruction of 400.9 kilometres of federal highways. Dangote Group will carry out the work under a tax-credit arrangement using durable concrete pavement technology. The council also approved the full business case for the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway operation and maintenance. Procurement will follow a modified Swiss challenge model to rebuild worn sections with concrete, boosting safety and cutting long-term maintenance costs. Other approvals include Phase II of the Yola–Fufore–Gurin Road in Adamawa at ₦15.246 billion. An extra ₦15 billion was added to the Gashua road project in Yobe to offset rising material costs. These moves form part of wider efforts to modernise Nigeria’s transport network.

Seeing so many states included is ambitious, but past delays on federal road schemes make me wonder if timely completion is realistic.

I no think throwing more money alone go solve the pothole problem; accountability and proper oversight must come first.

Community groups should track project milestones and report any delays so citizens can hold authorities accountable throughout construction phases.
