Plateau’s Muslim Representation Debate Deserves a Hearing
Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir’s concerns about Muslim representation in Plateau State have reopened a difficult but necessary conversation. His argument is that key political and security positions appear to be held largely by Christians, leaving many Muslim citizens feeling excluded from decisions that affect peace and security. I believe the issue should be examined rather than dismissed. Muslim groups had also raised concerns over an 11-member state security committee that reportedly had no Muslim member, prompting promises of broader inclusion. In a state marked by recurring ethnic and religious violence, every major community must feel heard. Plateau has lost innocent Muslims and Christians alike. Lasting peace cannot be built on distrust or the perception that one group is shut out of power. The real question is how the state can ensure fair representation, restore confidence and prevent division from being exploited for political gain.
