Mexican Teen Wins Gold for Sound-Wave Fire Extinguisher Prototype
Sixteen-year-old Mexican student Ángela Karime Venegas Hernández has won a gold medal at the 2026 International Science and Invention Fair in Indonesia for Vortex Tech, a prototype fire extinguisher that uses low-frequency sound waves. The device combines a 12-volt battery, frequency generator, amplifier and speaker to produce sound waves of about 30 hertz. The waves disturb the air around a flame, creating vortex-like currents that can interrupt combustion in small fires. Venegas developed the project while studying electronics in Altamira, Mexico, after seeing how sound waves could affect flames. She refined the prototype with support from her project adviser and uncle. Vortex Tech is still experimental and has only been tested on small fires. It is not a replacement for certified fire extinguishers, especially for large or dangerous fires.
