Chinese Traders at Lagos Trade Fair: Protect Local Businesses or Make Nigeria Compete?
The dispute over alleged Chinese retail trading at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex raises a bigger question: should Nigeria shield local traders from direct foreign competition, or build businesses that can compete globally? Local manufacturers, especially in hubs such as Aba, face high power costs, limited access to finance, weak infrastructure, costly raw materials and outdated machinery. These constraints make it difficult for small producers to match the scale, pricing and supply chains available to major Chinese factories. Nigeria should enforce clear rules on retail access, taxes, product standards, intellectual property, employment and customs compliance. But the long-term solution is not protection alone. It is investment in factories, industrial clusters, reliable electricity, affordable manufacturing finance and better product standards. Chinese investment can create jobs and production capacity when it supports local manufacturing. The real test is whether Nigeria can build competitive businesses that offer consumers durable, affordable and well-designed products.
