Ukwu-Nzu’s Discoloured Rivers: What the 2024 Mining Dispute Still Leaves Unanswered
Residents of Ukwu-Nzu in Aniocha North, Delta State, raised concerns in February 2024 after the Odo and Ojokpa waterways reportedly turned muddy and brown. The controversy prompted fears about drinking water, health and the possible impact of nearby coal-mining activity. Published reports recorded allegations against Mosra Energy Limited, which denied responsibility and linked the discolouration to erosion-control drainage. Delta State officials reportedly collected water samples for analysis, while a later report attributed the change in Ojeokpa stream to localised earth movement associated with a landslide. The available reports do not include the full laboratory findings, sampling locations, test methods or a complete government assessment. Water colour alone does not prove contamination, and reported illnesses cannot be linked to the waterways without public-health evidence. Residents, regulators and the company should provide verifiable records on the tests, inspections, monitoring and any remedial action taken. The key question remains whether the waterways are safe for the community today.
