Military Says Amnesty Report on Giwa Barracks Deaths Dates Back to 2016

The military says a circulating Amnesty International report on deaths and detention conditions at Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri is not a recent publication. Operation Hadin Kai said the report was released in May 2016 and covered allegations recorded between January and May of that year. It warned that sharing the report without its date and context could wrongly suggest that the alleged deaths occurred recently. The task force said the Joint Investigation Centre now operates under Nigerian laws and applicable international standards. It added that detainees receive care, education and vocational training, while media and humanitarian organisations have been allowed access to observe conditions at the facility.
