Farotimi: More VDMs Will Emerge If Nigeria’s Judiciary Is Not Fixed

Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi says the popularity of social media activist VeryDarkMan reflects Nigeria’s weak justice system. He made the remarks while reacting to the controversy over VeryDarkMan’s appearance at the Nigerian Bar Association’s annual conference in Port Harcourt. Farotimi argued that Nigerians would not need social media figures to seek redress if the police, courts and other public institutions worked properly. He said attempts to silence or attack VeryDarkMan would not solve the institutional failures behind his influence. He also rejected the idea that the judiciary remains the last hope of ordinary Nigerians. Farotimi warned that more figures could emerge, and that some may adopt more dangerous methods, unless the country reforms its justice system and restores public trust in the rule of law.
