Boko Haram Kites Out Nigerian Army Commander Lt. Col. Umar Farouq in Borno Attack
A fresh Boko Haram assault on the military base in Kukuwa town, Borno State, killed Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq. Militants dislodged troops, set vehicles ablaze and stole ammunition before attacking local residents. This loss comes less than 72 hours after another senior officer, Lt. Col. S.I. Iliyasu of 222 Battalion, was killed in Konduga. Militants have repeatedly targeted military posts under Operation Hadin Kai. In recent nights, gunmen struck bases in Konduga, Mainok, Jakana and Marte. They burned armoured tanks, destroyed vehicles and abducted civilians. Military sources say troops repelled some attacks and killed scores of insurgents, but casualties remain high.
