MI5 Warns Terrorists May Use AI-Enabled Drones to Plan Attacks
MI5 Director-General Sir Ken McCallum says terrorists are exploring artificial intelligence to improve reconnaissance and attack planning, including the potential use of AI-enabled drones. In his annual security speech, McCallum said AI could give less sophisticated groups access to capabilities that were previously difficult to obtain. He said the agency is especially concerned about terrorists seeking biological, radiological or energy-related capabilities. He also announced an MI5 threat assessment centre focused on AI. The agency says it is increasing resources for hostile-state threats, including alleged activity linked to Iran and Russia, while warning of a rise in extreme right-wing terrorism cases linked to anti-immigration and anti-Muslim grievances in Britain.
