37 Die in NSCDC Custody in Minna as Federal Government Orders Investigation
The deaths of dozens of detainees in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Minna, Niger State, have prompted investigations by the Federal Government, the NSCDC and the National Human Rights Commission. The detainees were arrested during an operation against suspected illegal mining around the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas on September 15 and 16. The NSCDC said the deaths were discovered early on September 17 and initially linked them to a suspected disease outbreak. Authorities have given conflicting death tolls, with reports citing 37 deaths while later NSCDC statements confirmed 33. A 10-member federal committee has been directed to determine the cause of the deaths, examine possible negligence or misconduct, and recommend action. The NHRC has called for independent forensic autopsies and preservation of evidence. Twenty-four NSCDC personnel have reportedly been placed in custody for interrogation and disciplinary procedures. A survivor also alleged that a chemical substance was sprayed in the detention room, causing breathing difficulties. The allegation has not been independently verified. Investigators are expected to establish the number of detainees held, the conditions in the facility, the medical response, and whether proper procedures were followed.
