Throwback: Tokunbo Awolowo’s 10th Birthday Party in Ibadan, 1958

In 1958, Tokunbo Awolowo, daughter of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, marked her 10th birthday at the family home in Oke Bola, Ibadan. Her classmates from U.M.C. Demonstration School in Molete joined the celebration. The photograph captures Tokunbo cutting her cake with friends including Femi Omololu Thomas, Fola Oduba, Bola Adetula, Joko Olunloyo, Taiwo Imokhuede, Dr. Femi Ogunsanya and Taiwo Opanubi. One girl in the picture has not been identified. More than six decades later, the image remains a warm record of childhood friendship and family life in late-1950s Ibadan, during a defining period in Nigeria’s history.
