7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Southern Mexico, Tsunami Alerts Issued

7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Southern Mexico, Tsunami Alerts Issued

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck about 48 km off the coast of Aquiles Serdan, Mexico, at a depth of 18 km on July 17. Over 30 aftershocks followed, the strongest measuring 6.8, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake triggered a tsunami threat alert along parts of the Pacific coast. Authorities urged residents to move away from beaches. The tremor was felt in Chiapas and Oaxaca states, as well as neighbouring Guatemala and El Salvador. No casualties have been confirmed so far. In Tuxtla Gutierrez, many people evacuated buildings. President Claudia Sheinbaum said there were no serious effects, and navy officials reassured the public that major impacts were unlikely.

How prepared do people living near Aquiles Serdan feel after that 7.3-magnitude quake and the tsunami alerts?

True talk, that quake shook everyone. Makes sense people don dey watch alerts and plan their next moves.

Even with a depth of 18 km and 48 km offshore, I'm not convinced this quake couldn't still cause serious coastal damage.

I'd argue those tsunami alerts might have been a bit premature, since most quakes of this scale offshore don't lead to actual waves.

Residents along the coast should keep emergency kits handy and follow official evacuation routes if aftershocks or warning sirens go off.
