Uber Driver Jailed for Five Years After Passenger’s Death Following Dispute Over Vomit in Car
An Uber driver, Hayadulla Turkmani, has been sentenced to five years in prison after passenger Michael Ashton died when he was struck by the driver’s car outside his home in Basildon, Essex. The court heard that Ashton became sick in the back seat during the journey home. He and his partner went inside to get wet wipes, but an argument continued outside. Ashton suffered a severe brain injury after being hit by Turkmani’s Toyota Prius and later died in hospital. Turkmani was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and banned from driving for seven and a half years. He was cleared of murder and manslaughter after the jury found there was no proof that he intended to hit Ashton.
