Why Trump’s Iran War May Be Lasting Longer Than Expected
I argue that Donald Trump underestimated Iran’s ability to sustain a prolonged conflict. Iran’s experience during the Iran-Iraq War, including its resistance despite chemical attacks, shows why it was unlikely to capitulate quickly. I also point to historical documents cited by a commentator as evidence of US complicity in Iraqi war crimes under Ronald Reagan. In my view, this history is often overlooked in discussions of US intervention in the Middle East. I believe the prolonged war is worsening Trump’s political and economic pressures at home, including weak job figures, rising debt concerns and falling public approval. I also argue that candidates in his party are distancing themselves ahead of the midterm elections.
