A 1976 newspaper report said an Area Court judge in Makurdi, Benue State, was arrested over allegations that he demanded and received a ₦20 bribe from an accused person appearing before him. Police reportedly marked the money after the accused alleged that the judge had asked for ₦40 to assist his case. The accused was facing a charge of receiving stolen property and had reportedly remained in custody after several adjournments. The Benue Commissioner of Police said the judge was granted bail and would face trial at the Makurdi High Court. The judge's department was also advised to interdict him pending the outcome of the case. At the 1976 exchange rate, ₦20 was said to be worth about $36.
