Tanzania Charges 61 Protest Detainees With Terrorism, Opposition Says

Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, says 61 people arrested over planned anti-government protests have been charged with terrorism-related offences. The party says most of those charged are its members, while about 70 other detainees remain in police custody without formal charges. The arrests followed planned nationwide demonstrations on July 7. Police said suspects were linked to messages inciting unrest and were accused of planning violence, including attacks on public property, the power grid and police officers. Chadema rejects the terrorism allegations, arguing that participation in or calls for peaceful demonstrations should not be treated as terrorism. Its leader, Tundu Lissu, has been in custody since April 2025 on treason charges.
