Scams Targeting Nigerians Right Now and How to Avoid Them
Scammers are using social media, fake websites, AI-generated celebrity endorsements and bank impersonation to trick Nigerians into sending money or exposing personal details. Common traps include unregistered investment platforms, fake crypto and forex dashboards, job offers that demand fees, referral-based WhatsApp or Telegram schemes, fraudulent online stores and romance scams. Many of these schemes appear convincing at first, sometimes paying early participants to build trust before disappearing. Before making a payment, verify the company independently and confirm that investment platforms are properly registered. Avoid offers promising guaranteed or unusually fast returns. Never share your banking password, card details or OTP with anyone, even if they claim to represent your bank. A few minutes of verification can prevent serious financial loss. Be especially cautious when an offer comes with pressure to act immediately or sounds too good to be true.
