Peter Obi: Tinubu Administration Covered Up ₦8.83tn in 2025 Budget, IMF Data Shows
Peter Obi has accused President Bola Tinubu’s government of hiding about ₦8.83 trillion in off-budget spending. He cited an IMF assessment that this amount—equivalent to roughly 2 percent of GDP—was omitted from the official 2025 budget, escaping legislative oversight. Obi said the unreported expenditure exceeded combined allocations for education and health. He argued the funds could have funded infrastructure projects, created jobs and strengthened public services. He called the administration “grossly corrupt, incompetent and insensitive” and renewed his demand for Tinubu’s resignation. An IMF representative in Nigeria confirmed gaps in fiscal reporting, noting that some capital outlays were carried out outside the formal budget process. The fund urged improved transparency so that Nigeria’s true deficit and financing needs are accurately presented. The presidency has not yet responded to these allegations.
