Oshiomhole Says ₦2,000 Can Buy a Meal in Nigeria, While $1 Buys Nothing in US
Senator Adams Oshiomhole has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, arguing that the cost of living in Nigeria remains lower than in the United States. He made the comparison on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, saying ₦2,000 can buy food at a local “mama put” restaurant, while $1 cannot buy anything in the US. Oshiomhole said the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate were painful but necessary steps to prevent the economy from collapsing. He argued that subsidy payments and debt servicing had left little money for development before Tinubu took office. He said the savings could support infrastructure, education, health and the student loan scheme. Oshiomhole dismissed claims that the reforms have made Nigerians poorer and urged the public to be patient, saying their benefits would become clearer over time.
