I Sent ₦50k to My Online Love Interest Before Discovering She Was a Catfish
After painful betrayals in two previous relationships, I took time away from dating and focused on rebuilding my life. When I moved to Lagos in late 2025, loneliness led me to try a dating app, where I met a woman who seemed kind, consistent and easy to talk to. She said she was caring for her sick father in Ibadan, so I sent her ₦50,000 and later sent more money and gifts. We spoke for over two months but never met or had a video call. Her excuses began to feel suspicious. With help from a friend, I discovered that her photos belonged to another woman. When I confronted her, she denied it, blocked me and deleted her dating profile. A call from another number was answered by a man, confirming that I had been catfished. The experience left me ashamed, heartbroken and wary of trusting people too quickly. For now, I am taking a break from dating and learning to pay closer attention to red flags.
