Obasa: State Police Cannot Work Under Federal Control
Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa says state police will not function effectively unless the Federal Government gives states greater control over their security systems. Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, Obasa said the proposed constitutional amendment was a step forward but still left major powers at the centre. He argued that federal supremacy in conflicts between state and National Assembly laws could weaken the purpose of state policing. The assembly endorsed the proposed Sixth Alteration Bill, 2026, sent to state legislatures for ratification. Obasa said Nigeria needs a more decentralised security structure and expressed hope that future reforms would give states fuller authority over state police.
