Nephrologist Denies Role in Alleged Kidney-Harvesting Network, Says Transplants Followed Due Process

A consultant nephrologist arrested in connection with an alleged organ-harvesting and human-trafficking investigation has denied wrongdoing. He said his role is to treat kidney patients and ensure transplant procedures meet medical and legal requirements. He said prospective donors are screened to confirm they are at least 18 years old and medically fit. According to him, donors are also referred for legal documentation, including an affidavit confirming that the donation is voluntary and not induced by payment. The doctor said his team did not know that names allegedly provided by a donor were fictitious. Police, however, allege that a suspect facilitated the removal of a 22-year-old man's kidney at an Abuja hospital after agreeing to pay him ₦1.7 million. Investigations are ongoing.
