Haitian-Born Ohio Student Dies After Losing TPS Protections

Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old Haitian-born college student in Ohio, died after walking into traffic on Interstate 70, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Authorities said the incident remains under investigation. Bel had reportedly become distressed after losing Temporary Protected Status protections and being required to wear a GPS ankle monitor. His father said Bel had struggled emotionally in the weeks before his death and called home on the morning of the incident saying he was not mentally okay. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine described the death as a “horrible tragedy.” Bel’s family and a local pastor believe immigration enforcement actions, including the ankle-monitor requirement, contributed to his distress. Bel had previously said the monitor made him feel ashamed and treated like a criminal while trying to continue his education and play college sports. The case has renewed debate over the human impact of ending Haiti’s TPS designation, which could expose hundreds of thousands of Haitian nationals in the United States to possible removal.
