Political Hate or Hypocrisy? Nigerians Slam First Lady’s Hustle Advice

Many Nigerians reacted angrily to a video of the First Lady urging youth to try akara selling and roadside corn roasting. Critics—often Gen Z blaming Tinubu for all of Nigeria’s problems, or political opponents who reject anything from the president’s family—insulted her with harsh words. But unemployment has plagued graduates long before this administration. Since 2010, young Nigerians have had to hustle in logistics, hospitality, teaching and catering to survive. I experienced this myself after NYSC, teaching for 19 months before starting a gas outlet and logistics business. Calling out critics who praised past governments yet dismiss simple entrepreneurship advice now seems hypocritical. Did unemployment really begin in 2023, or is that just political hate talking?

It seems most of the backlash comes from Gen Z critics who blame Tinubu for everything and reject any initiative linked to his family.

Calling her advice hypocritical feels unfair when entrepreneurship and street vending have always been survival strategies for so many here.

A better approach could be community workshops teaching hygiene, basic accounting and marketing for akara sellers and roadside corn vendors to boost incomes.
