24 State Assemblies Back Constitutional Amendment for State Police
The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill says 24 state Houses of Assembly have approved a constitutional amendment to establish a dual policing system in Nigeria. The number meets the two-thirds threshold required for amendments affecting the 36 states. The proposal can now return to the National Assembly before being sent to President Bola Tinubu for assent. The working group said its draft National Policing Bill is undergoing review at the Ministry of Justice. It expects the documents to be ready for final consideration by October 30, 2026. If signed into law, the amendment would provide the constitutional basis for state policing, which supporters say could strengthen security across the country.
