Atiku Praised the 2019 Zamfara Ruling—Should the Same Rule Apply Today?
In May 2019, Atiku Abubakar praised the Supreme Court after it nullified APC candidates’ victories in Zamfara State. He said justice had prevailed and argued that the rule of law should come before political interests. The court’s decision was based on the APC’s failure to conduct valid primaries. Its votes were declared wasted, and eligible runners-up who met the required conditions were declared winners. The episode raises a question about political consistency: should judicial decisions be respected only when they favour one’s own party? The rule of law should apply regardless of whether the beneficiary is APC, PDP, ADC or another party.
