Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri Becomes Morocco’s First Female Head of Government
Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri has been appointed Morocco’s first female head of government after her Authenticity and Modernity Party emerged as the largest bloc in the parliamentary election. Her party won 97 of the 395 seats in the House of Representatives, short of the 198 needed for a majority. She must now negotiate with other parties to form a coalition government. El Mansouri is only the second woman to lead a government in an Arab country, after Tunisia’s Najla Bouden. A lawyer and former mayor of Marrakesh, she previously served in Morocco’s housing and urban-policy ministry. Her incoming government will face economic pressure, unemployment and concerns about living standards, while also overseeing preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
