Why the South-East Should Pursue a Sixth State From Within the Region

There is no constitutional requirement that a proposed state must meet a particular landmass threshold. Population spread, administrative viability and political representation matter more. The South-East, as a densely populated region, has a valid case for a sixth state carved out from within its existing boundaries. The push to link the region’s demand to the Anioma project in Delta North was misguided. The proposed Anioma-Orsu arrangement, including reported plans to move the capital away from Asaba, faced resistance from many Anioma stakeholders. That resistance has weakened the wider conversation about a sixth South-East state. A separate Orsu state proposal could have competed with other internal proposals, such as Ada State, without making territorial expansion the central issue. A sixth state created within the South-East would improve senatorial representation, federal legislative presence and access to appointments. The region should focus on an internally viable state-creation proposal rather than expansion into Delta North.
