Why Redeploying Osun’s Police Commissioner Can Protect Election Confidence

As an Osun indigene, I have no horse in this race. To me, this is largely an internal APC matter, and the election should be decided by persuasion, organisation and votes—not by pre-election controversy. I believe the Inspector-General of Police was right to redeploy the Osun State Commissioner of Police. This is not necessarily an indictment of Commissioner Ibrahim Gotan. But once a major political camp loses confidence in the neutrality of an election referee, rightly or wrongly, that officer's ability to command trust is weakened. A referee may follow every rule, yet every decision becomes controversial when one side believes the match is biased. Replacing the referee in such circumstances can protect the credibility of the process. With the governorship election approaching, public confidence in the police must come first. I do not know whether the APC will win, especially given questions around its political relationships and coalition-building. My concern is simple: Osun must vote peacefully, every vote must count, and the winner must emerge from a process both sides can respect.

What safeguards would make this redeployment feel fair to supporters of every side?

I agree. Clear procedures, transparent communication, and equal treatment of all parties would help build trust.

The emphasis on persuasion, organisation and votes is a useful reminder that confidence matters before polling begins.

Redeployment may reduce controversy, but it will not automatically settle doubts unless the process is clearly explained.

Authorities should communicate the reason, timeline and election-security arrangements early, so attention returns to campaigns and voters.
