Investigation Links 61 Nigerian Officials and Associates to $271m in US Properties
A new investigation has linked 61 current and former Nigerian senior officials, their relatives, associates and affiliated companies to 284 properties in the United States valued at nearly $271 million. The report, produced by two anti-corruption organisations, reviewed property acquisitions dating back to 1991. It found that 152 properties worth about $177 million were bought while the individuals concerned were serving in public office. It also said 230 properties, valued at about $232 million, appeared to have been purchased without identifiable financing. Security-sector officials and associates accounted for the largest share of the properties reviewed. The report noted that 39 of the 61 people examined had previously faced public accusations, indictments or convictions connected to corruption. However, a property link alone does not prove that any asset was bought with illicit funds.
