Ondo Court Remands 20-Year-Old for Alleged Rape of 18-Year-Old Hawker

An Akure Magistrates Court has ordered that a 20-year-old man be remanded at Olokuta Correctional Centre over allegations of raping an 18-year-old hawker. The prosecutor told the court the defendant allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of the victim around 2:30 p.m. on June 11 in Ijagba Community, Ifon. He faces charges under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law of Ondo State, 2020. According to the victim, she was selling herbal medicine and ponmo when the defendant and an accomplice, who is still at large, lured her to their residence under the pretext of collecting payment. She said they forcefully restrained her, covered her mouth and committed the assault. The court has adjourned for advice from the Director of Public Prosecution before fixing a date for trial.
