Abuja Court Remands Blogger Stanley Ugagbe Over Defamation Charges Against CBN Deputy Governor

Abuja Court Remands Blogger Stanley Ugagbe Over Defamation Charges Against CBN Deputy Governor

On July 14, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered that blogger Stanley Ugagbe be remanded in Kuje Prison. He faces six counts of cyberstalking and defamation against Emem Usoro, Deputy Governor for Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria. Prosecutors allege Ugagbe and a co-defendant published articles accusing Usoro of adultery and hiding luxury properties in California and Los Angeles. They are charged under the Cybercrimes Act 2015 (as amended) and the Penal Code Act. Ugagbe pleaded not guilty. His lawyer filed a bail application, which Justice Salim Ibrahim said he would review. The case was adjourned to September 24, with a directive that all prosecution witnesses appear on the next date.

It's notable that Stanley Ugagbe faces defamation and cyberstalking charges instead of a settlement or retraction option.
