Remembering Patrick Dele Cole: Diplomat, Intellectual and Trusted Presidential Adviser
The death of Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole on 17 October 2026 is a painful loss to Nigeria. I first met him in November 1999, shortly after President Olusegun Obasanjo began his civilian administration, when I was deployed from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work with him as a Special Assistant on international relations. He brought exceptional intellect, discipline and courage to public service. His office became a key centre for reviewing major policy memos and shaping Nigeria’s international engagements. He played important roles in Nigeria’s preparations for the Millennium Summit, the development of NEPAD and efforts to place the Nigerian diaspora on the country’s foreign-policy agenda. He was a demanding but inspiring leader who encouraged us to think beyond conventional solutions. He was urbane, persuasive and deeply committed to Nigeria, combining intellectual rigour with warmth and an unforgettable presence. My condolences go to his family and all who worked with him. Ambassador Cole lived a life of remarkable public service and impact. May his soul rest in peace.
