FG Considers Hydropower for Future Flood-Control Projects as Lagos Flooding Persists
The Federal Government is considering adding hydropower generation to future flood-control projects, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Joseph Utsev said during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Lagos. Utsev said the approach could improve water management, strengthen flood resilience and create jobs for people who operate and maintain the facilities. He said the plan would require collaboration among the Federal Government, states, private-sector partners and development organisations. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency said the proposal would be included among options under technical consideration. It also warned that above-normal rainfall forecast for 2026 could bring further flooding in the coming weeks. Recent heavy rains in Lagos have submerged roads, damaged homes and disrupted businesses. The inspection assessed affected communities, drainage channels and existing flood-control infrastructure ahead of further interventions.
