Ghana Accuses Russia of Deceiving Africans Into Fighting in Ukraine War
Ghana is pressing Russia to stop the alleged deceptive recruitment of young Africans into its war in Ukraine. Research groups estimate that people from 37 African countries have been targeted, including Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, Kenya, Mali and South Africa. At least 272 Ghanaians are reported to have fought for Russia, with 62 deaths recorded by mid-August. Ghana’s foreign minister has urged Moscow to halt the recruitment, saying many young people seeking jobs are being misled into joining the military. Investigators say recruitment networks use fake websites, social-media accounts and misleading adverts for construction jobs, visa support and film roles. The reports say these campaigns often promise generous benefits before recruits are sent into the conflict. The allegations have renewed calls for African governments to scrutinise Russia’s military and economic commitments more closely, especially where recruitment networks may be exploiting unemployed young people.
